interesting. i’d say their numbers are too frugal for my usage, but the point still stands — when you run the numbers, it’s not that much

Stop stressing about the energy and carbon footprint of ChatGPT. It’s not a big deal www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com/p/carbon-foo...

bullshit data, yet again

how do we inoculate the masses against math manipulation?

it’s not even about AI. how do you teach people to sniff out bullshit?
The reason we often think that ChatGPT is an energy guzzler is because of the initial statement: it uses 10 times more energy than a Google search. Even if this is accurate, what’s missing is the context that a Google search uses a really tiny amount of energy. Even 10 times a really tiny number is still tiny.

i remember some political activist a long time ago tried getting me to sign a petition using numbers, something like “$3 billion is being directed to…”

it’s easy to see that and think, “$3B is a lot!”

but without a sense of scale, you don’t know

(fwiw the activist didn’t know either)

i credit my dad — he taught me to always ask the dumb questions, someone else will appreciate it

it also untrains you from pretending you understand, and a lot of bullshit numbers depend on playing into your sense of self worth
