you can absolutely build programming & query languages on top of JSON or YAML. You can use it as a lexer to a larger language. They always work because they can represent ASTs

in that regard JSON & YAML are deceptive bc they let you pretend you’re not actually taking on the complexity of a language

i’m actually curious how many people look at elasticsearch filters or mongodb queries and not see languages
